How to Bring a Pop of Color to Your Patio

I get it – you want to entertain outside, but your patio is just a little…bland. You know you need to bring in some color, but you’re not sure where to start. Have no fear, I come with advice not only on how to get started, but also to show you a before and after of a spruced up patio so you can see just how easy it can be.

Have a Plan

It may sound a bit trite, but there’s something to be said for having a plan going in. Know what pieces you need – furniture, decor, accessories, lights, etc, and prioritize which ones you need to get now versus what can be purchased down the line to complete the look.

Pick a Palette

I’m not saying pick a single color (though you can if that’s what you really prefer), but it’s important to know what colors you want to incorporate into your space so you know how to incorporate them without it looking like Rainbow Brite exploded all over your patio.

Pick 2 – 3 colors that you’ll use, a main color and one to two accent colors. You can use various shades of these colors, so saying that you want “blue” can mean you want anything from teal to navy and every shade in between.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

It’s ok to experiment. Try colors that don’t normally go together (looking at you purple and yellow outside of Mardi Gras). Make lighting a more focal point of your patio. Don’t be afraid to mix it up and try something new – it can always be changed if you step back and cringe, but you won’t know until you give it a shot.

Don’t forget that pieces like vases, fountains, and outdoor art are great ways to introduce small amounts of color to your patio. A colorful vase with bright flowers can prove to be the perfect extra pop of color your patio needs without having to put out something more permanent.

Alright, so now the question comes, do I know how to follow my own advice? Well you tell me. Here’s what our friends over at The Styled Soul started with:

And here was the final result. It’s pretty amazing what a little time and the right pieces can do to brighten up what could be an uninspiring spot.

Adding some color to your patio doesn’t have to require a team of HGTV designers (no matter how nice that would be). A little planning, the right pieces, and knowing that (almost) nothing is permanent will lead to a patio that you love, was easier to design than you thought, and that you’ll be excited to show off.
